Achievements

Meeting the ASW Challenge in a Hostile Environment
The modern conventional submarine has achieved remarkable advances in mobility and endurance, sensor capability, armament and stealth. It is increasingly challenging to contain the submarine threat with only passive sensors. Low frequency active sonar technology provides a much-improved capability.

The Pioneer of Low Frequency Tactical Sonar
Traditional low frequency variable depth sonar equipment is very cumbersome, heavy and expensive. A convergence of technologies pioneered by Ocean Systems for over 25 years has allowed the fielding of tactical towed and dipping sonars to operate at less than 1.5 kHz. Significantly enhanced performance is matched by truly small size and weight at an affordable cost. These sonars, the Low Frequency Active Towed Sonar (LFATS) and the Helicopter Long-Range Active Sonar (HELRAS), are turning the tide against all submarine threats, in all environments.

LFATS and HELRAS
LFATS and HELRAS can operate independently, or jointly in bistatic mode for enhanced performance and tactical advantage.

LFATS
LFATS is a four-ton, 1.38 kHz, CZ-capable VDS sonar system for all types of combatants and patrol vessels. It offers excellent shallow water performance, even against small, quiet, slow targets.

HELRAS
A 1.38 kHz version of the AQS-18A, HELRAS is CZ-capable and an excellent performer in shallow waters against all threats, yet still easily fits onboard an SH-70 or an SH-3. HELRAS was chosen by the Italian Navy for its EH-101 and NH-90.
